Your critics are your real fans – Criticism as a way to improve

Numbers are simple, it’s impossible that 100% of the people agree with us. Many times we overreact when someone doesn’t agree with the way we think or act.

We believe that perfection is a synonym of success, and that’s why we get affected by critics so easy. We constantly forget that everything can be seen, measured and judged from different points of view, and that ours is not necessarily truth or at least is not the absolute truth.

Criticism is always going to be present, it’s the other side of the coin of success. Our fears and our ego tell us to avoid the fact that critics and detractors will always be present.

The importance of criticism

It´s already clear that criticism and the people who always criticize will always be present in everything we do. It’s important to identify the types of criticism that exists, the role each of them plays and how to confront that accordingly, depending on where they come. It’s not a matter of separating criticism between positive and negative (since the two types are absolutely valid and necessary) but between meaningful criticism and criticism without meaning.

Meaningful criticism

It doesn’t matter if someone is against or in favor of what we are doing. If the criticism is with the objective of improving, it’s a meaningful criticism. We all have the right to make a positive or negative opinion about something, as long as it is with the objective of building something better, something meaningful. These type of critiques are those that act as feedback, from which we can extract valuable components.

Accept it and put it into practice. After all, how do companies and people improve, if it’s not through feedback from their environment?

Nonsense criticism

There’s also a destructive type of criticism, used by people who couldn’t achieve their dreams or develop their projects, so they use their time to make negative criticism to other people projects.

These type of criticism is very dangerous, since we tend to pay more attention and get affected by this type of criticism. Why? Because it contains a stronger emotional load. People who use this type of criticism are experts manipulating our emotions, and addressing the issues in which we are more sensitive. They try to mess with our mind. They don’t say things to help us improve our projects, our company or our life, they seek to destroy it.

How to treat these type of criticism?

They must be completely ignored; we need to be conscious of the type of person from which it comes. By being aware of this, we will avoid falling into the trap of losing focus by thinking about how to answer to those critics. Don’t speak, don’t answer, let your actions speak for you. Destructive critics feed themselves with the frustration and the despair of the people they attack, so if you ignore them, they end up running out of fuel.

Next time you get criticized, remember:

  1. Who is the critic coming from?
  2. Is it a constructive or a destructive criticism? Is it worth listen to that critic?
  3. If it is a constructive type of criticism, adopt it and apply it.
  4. If it is a negative type of criticism, ignore it and continue working. Your Actions and your work will end up talking for you.
  5. Finally, remember that regardless the nature of the critic…it´s not worth it to take it personally.
